System Services/Programs
What most people think the OS is, they might be correct it doesn't say
File manipulation
Create, delete, copy, rename, print, dump, list, and generally manipulate files and directories.
May also provide a text editor.
Status information (sometimes stored in a file)
Baso outputs the status of the system, it may get logged in a file:
- Num of users
- What resources are being used
- Whats the date
- Literally anything else you can think of
Programming language support
Compilers, Assemblers, Debuggers and Interpreters
Program loading and execution
Absolute loaders, relocatable loaders, linkage editors,
and overlay-loaders, debugging systems for higher-level and machine language
Communications
Provides the interface between the User, Processes, and other computer systems
Background services
Provide things like:
- Launch at boot time
- disk check, process schedule, error logging
- Known as services, subsystems, daemons
Application programs
- run by the user
- not a part of the OS
